Beyond The Salon
About Me
Jessica Willson
Owner & Stylist
I am a hairstylist with over 25 years in the industry. After working in the same salon for 22 years, in 2021, I decided to go into business for myself. I now rent a space at The Artery in Ferndale and get to work alongside some of my favorite humans.
I aim to provide my clients with creative, clean, inclusive, and high-quality services. I pride myself on taking the time to find out what exactly my clients want from each appointment and making a plan to get them the healthy, happy hair of their dreams. I use Malibu C wellness treatments to ensure the canvas is prepped and ready for color or styling. I use mostly Pulp Riot color to create, with Olaplex Bond Repair and Trionics developers to keep my client's hair healthy.

I am a recent graduate of Wayne State with a Ph.D. in Philosophy.
Here is the abstract from my dissertation project:
In the United States, hair salons remain unofficially segregated by race, reflecting broader patterns of systemic inequality with deep historical roots and contemporary manifestations. In this dissertation, I examine Black hair not merely as a physical attribute but as a profound aspect of cultural identity and personal expression. I aim to illuminate the broader implications of salon segregation, challenging the notion that it is a natural outcome of human preferences or tendencies. Instead, I argue that this segregation is the result of entrenched social processes, deliberate structural racism, and discriminatory policies that cause significant harm to Black individuals.
I live with my partner (who is also an adjunct professor), and our dog Wyatt. We love games, -both board and video - but mostly only have time for one or two hobbies these days.
Assassin's Creed Odyssey and Borderlands 2 are my favorite video games.
We love watching and playing D&D and are big fans of Critical Role and Dimension 20. I love literally anything Dropout TV puts out.
I'm working on becoming a Taskmaster super fan.
I've also started throwing and hand-building ceramics. I'm not good at it yet, but it is fun to play in clay.
On my rare time off, I can usually be found road (or plane) tripping to see my favorite band: Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers. I've been all over the place to see them over the last 20+ years. Really though, that is about the most exciting and adventurous I get, the rest of the time I'm a homebody and an introvert:)
